Bookmarking with Evernote, Even on the iPhone

Evernote is an amazing application for capturing, storing, and easliy finding information. If you're reading this article, you're probably already a fan. Evernote is excellent for managing your bookmarks as well. I've created an Evernote Notebook named 'Bookmarks' for just that. Say you're browsing the internet and you come across an awesome quote or a great tutorial you want to do later on...you've got a few choices:

  1. Bookmark it the old fashioned way. (As in use Firefox, Safari, etc.) But how many times have you bookmarked things only to never find them again?
  2. Save to Delicious, assign it some tags, find it again later using Delicious.
  3. Clip the specific part of the page that interested you into your Evernote Bookmarks folder, and find it later by searching for any of the words that were in the clip, or search by date clipped, etc. Evernote's true power is in its amazing search capability. You can find anything ever saved into it with ease.

On your PC / Mac

  1. First get either the Firefox extension or the Bookmarklet from the Evernote site.
  2. From any page you like, select the images and text that interest you and click the new Evernote icon in your browser.
  3. A popup will display. (You will be asked to login if you aren't already. ) Choose the Notebook you want to clip to - Bookmarks in this case. Optionally assign it any tags. USEFUL: Add a comment about why you bookmarked it, for example "Do this photoshop tutorial when I get home". Click Done.
That's it. Piece of cake, and now this new bookmark is easily findable from your computer, iPhone, or the Web.

On your iPhone

Setting up your iphone for clipping to Evernote is a piece of cake. Safari on the iPhone syncs with Safari on your Mac or PC, so if you have the Evernote bookmarklet in Safari you can use it.
  1. Open Safari on your computer
  2. Go to the Evernote site and drag the Bookmarklet up into Safari's boomark bar up top.
  3. Plug in your iphone and let it sync.
  4. Now you're ready to go. From your iphone browse to any page. Click the bookmark symbol, go to the Bookmarks Bar folder, and you'll see the new Clip to Evernote bookmarklet. Click it.
  5. From here its the exact same as on your PC/ Mac (See step 3 in the section above if you forgot already).
The only difference is that the iPhone doesn't have selection ability, so it will clip the whole page. Not a big deal, you can always delete content from the bookmark note later if you need.

To access your bookmarks on the iphone, you then simply open Evernote and browse the Bookmarks notebook, or do a simple search to find it.

Conclusion

Evernote is extremely powerful, even more so if you have an iPhone to carry your 'external brain' with you everywhere. There is absolutely no reason why Evernote can't be the only thing you need for managing your bookmarks. Services like Delicious offer a social aspect that Evernote won't give you, but if you don't care so much about other people's bookmarks then you won't miss a thing. Try it out.
